Respiratory product portfolio and COVID-19

COVID-19 and associated acute respiratory distress syndrome

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory tract infection caused by a newly emergent coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that was first recognized in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Genetic sequencing of the virus suggests that SARS-CoV-2 is a betacoronavirus closely linked to the SARS virus [1].

While most people with COVID-19 develop mild or uncomplicated illness, approximately 14% develop severe disease requiring hospitalization and oxygen support and 5% require admission to an intensive care unit [1]. In severe cases, COVID-19 can be complicated by acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock, multiorgan failure, including acute kidney injury and cardiac injury [2].

Approximately 20-30% of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and pneumonia have required intensive care for respiratory support.[3–4] Compared to patients not admitted to an intensive care unit, critically ill patients were older (median age 66 years versus 51 years), and were more likely to have underlying co-morbid conditions (72% versus 37%). [4] Among critically ill patients admitted to an intensive care unit, 11–64% received high-flow oxygen therapy and 47-71% received mechanical ventilation; some hospitalized patients have required advanced organ support with endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation (4–42%).[4–6] A small proportion have also been supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, 3–12%).[4–6].

Vibrating Mesh Nebulisers

Aerogen’s VMN inline circuit design enables nebulization without breaking the ventilation circuit, providing a significant safety advantage to patients suffering droplet spread infections like COVID-19.  The Aerogen can be used for different types of respiratory support, including HFOV, NIV, CPAP and HFNC.
